Shield
Elements from the coats of arms of the former 2d Coast Artillery and 2d Field Artillery have been incorporated for their historical importance. The fifteen red and white stripes allude to the Battle of Fort McHenry in 1814 at which time the flag of the United States was composed of fifteen stars and fifteen stripes. The field of ermines refers to service in Europe during World War I and World War II. The blue saltire refers to the organization's Civil War service, particularly the defense of Fort Pickens, the only fort south of Fort Monroe which remained loyal to the Federal government throughout the Civil War. It is given the position of honor at the top of the shield. The motto "The Second First" is taken from the older coat of arms of the two parent organizations.
Crest
Elements from the coats of arms of the former 2d Coast Artillery and 2d Field Artillery have been selected for their historical importance and combined to form a new coat of arms design for the 2d Artillery. Some of the organization's early war servicethe Indian Wars, the Philippine Insurrection and the Mexican War depicted respectively by the Indian arrow, the Philippine Kris and the snake and cactushas been placed above the shield in a position of prominence, forming the crest.
The coat of arms was approved on 8 July 1959. It was cancelled on 23 August 1971.
